Red/Silver Hybrid

The red-silver maple complex also possesses another remarkable trait: As they age, they undergo a sex change. In nature, the flowers of young trees start out as pollen-bearing males, but as they grow older, female flowers also begin to appear. The trees then enter a period where they manufacture both male and female flower clusters on the same tree, but by the time they reach full maturity, most trees produce only female flowers.
